What are Proofreading Services?

Proofreading, also proof-reading, can be most simply defined as follows:

to read through something that is written or printed in order to correct any mistakes in it
Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English

Focussing on the linguistic quality of the text, proofreading is a means of textual quality assurance. Spelling errors, grammar mistakes and textual consistency are the main points that are being checked in the proofreading process. As a result, proofreading can be applied to monolingual texts (texts written in a specific language) and their translations.

However, more technically speaking, the above is a very basic definition and used by language service buyers rather than language service providers - proofreading is from a technical point of view a term from the printing and publishing industry.

For the language service industry, proofreading is one step in a long process; in line with the translation industry standard EN 15038, this process consists of translation, checking, revision, review, proofreading and final verification. In this process, proofreading is the checking of proofs before publication.

For language service buyers, the differentiation of revision, review, proofreading and verification can be quite difficult; as we try to make things easy for our customers, we mainly refer to proofreading in our services section. The other steps are being performed internally and as a default when a translation is bought from EasyLSP.
