Professional Translators' Competences
The following is a checklist of the competences we look for in our professional translators.
Translating competence
The ability to translate texts to the required level, to assess text comprehension and text production issues, to render the target text in accordance with all agreements
Linguistic and textual competence in source and target language
The ability to understand the source language and mastery of the target language, knowledge of text type conventions for a wide range of standard-language and specialised texts, the ability to apply this knowledge when producing texts
Research competence, information acquisition and processing competence
The ability to efficiently acquire any additional linguistic and specialised knowledge necessary to understand the source text, to produce the target text, the ability to develop suitable strategies for the efficient use of information sources available and experience in the use of research tools
Cultural competence
The ability to make use of information on the locale, behavioural standards and value systems characterising the source and target cultures
Technical competence
The abilities and skills required for the professional preparation and production of translations and to operate technical resources
